Pennies for Peace at Al-Amal
February-March 2008
|
|
During the months of February and March, Al-Amal School is conducting a
Pennies for Peace drive in grades PreK through 5. Pennies for Peace is a
humanitarian program through the Central Asia Institute (CAI) founded by
MN born Greg Mortenson in Bozeman, Montana. It is designed to help build
schools for Muslim children, especially girls in Pakistan and
Afghanistan, thus providing education which our children take for
granted.

The students learn how an otherwise worthless coin holds the key to
education for a child in another country - a penny can buy a pencil.
They also learn that there are good people in the world like Greg
Mortenson who help Muslim children have a better future. It is important
to teach them not to forget how fortunate they are to have access to
education when there are children in the world for whom being able to go
to school is something special.
|
This has even more meaning considering that
many students – and teachers – are actually from Pakistan. By collecting
pennies and donating them to the noble cause of Greg Mortenson, they are
giving back to their home country.
Please visit www.penniesforpeace.org for more information or read the
book “Three Cups of Tea” by Greg Mortenson.
