LIBRARY HOURS
(The library will be staffed during the following hours during the
school year.)
Tuesday – Friday 8:30 –
3:00 p.m.
Classes are scheduled
during some periods. Individual middle/high school student visitors to
the library may come during times when the library is in use (with
permission slip from their teacher). Teachers needing resource
materials may check out materials during these times. Please enter and
leave quietly so that you do not disturb the current class.
Books will be available
for check-out by students and staff whenever the doors are open and the
librarian is there. Students may not enter the library when no
librarian or teacher is there.
Books and/or media must
be checked out by the librarian or library aide.
Please do not remove
materials from the library without checking them out first.
The book return box is
inside the library near the door.
Circulation Policy
Students may check out
one for one week. Books may be renewed in person.
Teachers and Staff may
check out books/media/posters for classroom and personal use for 3 weeks
Books must be renewed in
person. Overdue notices are sent out for delinquent books. Please do not
pass library books on to others without returning them to the library
first.
Library Organization
The library is organized
in the Dewey Decimal system. Everybody books and Easy Readers
are located near the window in bookshelves framed in yellow.
Junior/Juvenile Fiction, Non-Fiction books are located
near the story area in shelves framed in green. The Non-Fiction shelves
are framed in blue. The Young Adult fiction, Reference materials
and Professional books are on shelves near the LMC computers.. Shelf
labels are posted in the reference, fiction, biography, and other
sections to help library users navigate. Non-fiction books for
all reading levels are shelved together using the Dewey Decimal System.
Video/DVD and posters are in the Library checkout area. Professional
Resources including AV/DVD and posters are only available for staff
check-out.
There is a computerized
catalogue and checkout system which was designed by tenth grade students
in 2007-2008 and completed by Sr. Memoona Ghani, their teacher). This
will facilitate finding materials using a call number and searching by
keywords. There is one OPAC (On-line Public Access Catalog computer in
our LMC.
Services and Programs
The librarian is happy to
provide reference services during staffed hours or at a mutually agreed-
upon time. You may e-mail a request to the Sr. Jean at
jean.flomer@al-amal.org. Please include your phone number with your
request. The librarian will contact you as soon as possible.

Parent Book Nights
can be scheduled in the library by teachers on a quarterly basis
(Grades K-2 and 3-5)

Accelerated Reader
tests may be taken on library computers as well as any computer in
the building..

F.R.E.D (Father
Reading Every Day will be
available to parents of young readers beginning in 2010.
Children’s books are
available in English, Arabic, Somali, and other languages.
Listening Center
We have two chairs and a
listening center with four earphones in our listening center. We have
books on CD/cassette for use by our library users. We also have a
variety of Islamic discussions on tape available for adult listeners.
These may be used in the library. They may not be checked out.
Limited study/test
space is available. There is room for eight students to work at
tables. Clipboards are available for class use when needed for larger
groups. Study/test use should be pre-arranged.
IRG Programs
will be scheduled on weekends and weeknights annually. The programs
are open to Muslim and non-Muslim alike.
Periodicals
The library has the
following periodicals at this time. (We hope to get subscriptions
donated so that these and others will continue to be available.)

Back issues of magazines
will be kept for two years.. Please contact the librarian if you
would like to donate a subscription to a periodical for the library.
The Al-Amal School Library Teacher Resource Section
On the shelves nearest
the student computers, we have a collection of Teacher resource
materials for staff checkout only. The collection includes books,
reproducibles, instructional references and some video tapes/DVD’s for
classroom use. All materials are accessible on our collection
data-base.
Elementary
Library Curriculum is based on Minnesota Standards
Elementary students are
taught about the author and his/her other works in addition to library
terms and skills (i.e. using the Dewey Decimal System, book care, and
terms such author, illustrator, publisher, editor, etc.). Use of
reference materials, doing research and creating reports is included in
upper elementary classes.
What
makes ours a “library built by the Community”?
Ø
Staff, parents and students
donated gently-used and new books
Ø
Money was donated from many
sources including fundraisers, personal donations, prayer brothers,
individuals and families.
Ø
A rocking chair was donated from
a local muslimah with no family at Al-Amal.
Ø
A listening center was put
together in one week with donations from the elementary school teachers
and students.
Ø
8th grade Arabic
students researched, designed and created Islamic posters related to
reading and seeking
Ø
Fridley and Spring Lake Park
School Librarians provided information, networking and sometimes even
books and materials for the library.
Ø
Mary Caven, the Assistant
Director of the Anoka County Library visited our library and helped us
organize, visualize and acquire materials for improving our library.
Ø
Temporary shelving has been
donated by a local Muslim family.
Ø
Brothers have volunteered to
build appropriate shelving after we decide what will work best for us.
Ø
Brothers will design a temporary
computer inventory/check-out system to use until we have the funds to
purchase one.
Ø
Carpets have been donated for
use in our Story Corner.
Ø
Half-Price Books donated boxes
of high-quality used books.
Ø
Books in Somali/English were
donated by an Al-Amal family.
Ø
Demco Library Supplies provided
CAD drawings to help us design the space in our library.
Ø
7th grade Language
Arts students are helping create biographical and bibliographic
materials for use in the Elementary School Library classes.
Ø
Many students have volunteered
time in the library sorting, cleaning, repairing, and shelving books.
Ø
People have been involved as
“readers” to help us ensure that books are appropriate for our library.
Ø
The publishers of books by Harun
Yahya donated books to our library.
Ø
